GET READY FOR THE PINEWOOD DERBY!

Posted on Mar 16 2015 - 8:34pm

Get ready for the Pinewood Derby - Save the date - it's Saturday, March 21st!

You should have received by now, or be receiving from Den leaders soon, your scout's Pinewood Derby car kits. Your den leader will either plan a meeting around carving/shaping your scout's car at a woodworker's organization or advise you on where to go.

Please make sure to comply with our Pack's very specific requirements laid out below for this event. There are many no-nos to avoid and car must-haves too. Also, check out the offical BSA website at http://pinewoodderby.org/#/. It is a great resource to guide you through the design and building of your scout's car.

Pack 161- Pinewood Derby 2015 Rules and Regulations

Each scout should experience the satisfaction of building his own car from the pinewood derby kit. Parental assistance is encouraged and safety is the first concern, but the car should be the product of the scout and not the adult. The cars should be built in concert with the skills of the participant. Good sportsmanship is expected from everyone involved.Only newly built cars are allowed (previously raced cars are excluded). They need to be built from the official, distributed scout kit.

The wheels, axles and body from the official Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Kit must be used in the construction of the car. Wheels may not be modified beyond light sanding. The wheels may not be narrowed, grooved, crowned or significantly altered. They must be the wheels and axles (nails) provided in the kit. No steering, propulsion or guidance system is allowed. Gravity is the only propelling force allowed. No wheel bearings, bushings, washers, auxiliary suspension, springs or starting systems. Any weights used must be fixed to the car and may not flow in any way. Only dry lubricant is permitted (i.e. graphite powder).

Overall dimensions (including decorations and weights) are not to exceed a length of 7”, height of 3 ½”, and the width of 2-3/4”. The wheel base must be 1-3/4” to fit over the guide strips in the track and the clearance should be 3/8”. Weight shall not exceed 5 oz. You can add weights to your car (coins, weights, etc.) so long as you don’t exceed 5 oz.

Detailing of the car is permitted as long as they do not exceed the dimensions limitations listed above. All items should be tightly secured to the vehicle. Any item which falls off after the car is submitted will remain off the vehicle, and any damage that occurs may not be repaired. No modifications will be allowed after the car is submitted to race officials and may only be handled by race officials until conclusion of the race for that car.

The race officials will only place the car on the track and will not engage any switches, mechanisms or electronic devices. Ensure the vehicle design is sturdy enough to race multiple times. Please be sure that the front of the car is easily identifiable.

GREETINGS, PACK 161! REGISTRATION INFORMATION HERE

Posted on Sep 24 2014 - 10:12am

Greetings Pack 161 Scouts and Parents!

We hope you had an excellent summer! This time of year is a big change for all – with new schools, new forms to fill out, sports starting, birthday parties back on the weekend agenda….Always mixed feelings – summer out but good times ahead too…

Our Pack Committee is well underway planning another great year for the boys. We are working together at this time to map out and schedule a fun and exciting year but also a year geared towards service and commitment. After all, scouts are known for being super fun but also for helping out their friends in the community and beyond. We look forward to seeing you and your scouts again and we welcome the new Tigers! Michael Yoo and James Carrier will be heading the Pack again with Ric Davenport taking over for James mid to late Fall. You will be hearing from your Den Leaders as to the dates and details for your first monthly den meetings. If you are having any problems accessing the website, please contact Emily Salmore at emilysalmore@yahoo.com for ID and password. Everything goes on the website and it is important that you check in online or via Eblast whenever you can throughout the year.

 Registration Forms and Pack Dues

Both new and returning scouts will need to complete the following forms, if they have not already, and submit to their Den leaders at either at our first Pack Night or at their first den meeting. Both forms can be found on the website (www.darienpack161.org) under MENU->FILES->FORMS:

     1.   Activity Consent and Release Form

     2.   Annual Health and Medical Form, Parts A and B

Pack dues are $119 for all Tiger, Wolf and Bear scouts. Dues are $144 for Webelos 1 scouts. Webelos 2 scouts (since Webelos 1 scouts pay upfront for their Webelos 2 semester) are exempt from paying pack dues. These amounts include a small surcharge incurred by Paypal.

Dues can be paid under MENU->ONLINE PAYMENTS. For “Member Name”, please make sure to select your SCOUT (not your name or your spouse’s name) in the dropdown box (The system does not have the functionality to assign Member Name for payment to scouts). Once you have selected your scout and submitted, go to USER-> VIEW CART (red button) to check out using PayPal.  If you have any problem or cannot pay online for some reason, please send Michael Yoo a check at 14 Lighthouse Way in Darien or contact him directly at michael.yoo.darien@gmail.com for an alternative payment method. **Financial Assistance is always available in the event you are not able to support payment of Pack Dues at this time. Please contact Michael for access to this.**

Our first Pack Night will be held on Tuesday, September 23 at Tokeneke School from 6:30-7:30pm, so please save the date! The theme is TBD. (This is somewhat a break from tradition as new scouts/parents should know our Pack Nights are held almost always on Thursday evenings).  Please make every effort to be there as Pack Nights are considered mandatory events for advancements down the road. We will also be hosting an orientation for new scouts on Thursday, September 18 from 6:30-7pm at Tokeneke School.

Please stay posted for more important information on the first Pack Night and for the many exciting things that we have planned for the boys this year!
