The FMSC event was unlike anything I’ve participated in all year… we had a wonderful turn-out of scouts and their parents. Everyone I spoke to really enjoyed participating in this event. It was a very humbling and gratifying experience. I truly cannot wait until next year’s FMSC Food packing event!
Deer Lake Scout Reservation, 101 Paper Mill Rd., Killingworth, CT
Two dates to choose from: April 4 & April 11, 2015
Scouts only fish from 8 am - 11 am. Adults fish from 11 am - 1 pm.

First, a huge THANK YOU to our cub scouts and their families who participated in the "Food Wall" challenge. Together, we collected 34 boxes/bags of food which totaled 1,881 lbs. You'll be proud to know that this will go to feed approximately 65 families this holiday season. Let me be the first to say JOB WELL DONE!!!
On April 26th, we will be having our annual Friends of Scouting(FOS) presentation. This is the one time each year when families are asked to contribute financially to support the programs and services of the Connecticut Yankee Council, which in turn supports our pack. We wanted to send some information out ahead of time so that you understand just what FOS does for our unit.
When your son joins Pack 161, you pay annual membership dues. This covers your son’s registration with National Boy Scouts of America, and also supports our local, pack-level program. It does not cover Council or district-level expenses, which include operating costs and subsidies for Council camps and properties like Camp Sequassen and Deer Lake, District and Council programs and activities, adult leader training, or accident and sickness insurance coverage for all adults and youth. As we said, Friends of Scouting (FOS) covers those expenses, as well as providing camperships for Scouts whose families might not otherwise be able to afford to send their child to camp or join Scouting.
Did you know that it costs the Council an average of $180/Scout each year to support the programs and services currently provided? The entire Council operating budget is raised and spent locally -- and it is critical that each family does their part to support our Council programs. So when the Council volunteer visits our unit this Thursday to share some updates about the Council and make an appeal to each family to pledge in this campaign, I hope that you will give some thought to the value of the program your son is receiving in Cub Scouts. And when you receive a Friends of Scouting pledge card, please be prepared to make a donation or pledge. You can write a check, charge it to your credit card or pay it over the course of the year. Even a small investment makes a HUGE difference in the lives of our sons. We have always taken pride in our pack’s participation level in Friends of Scouting and this year our unit has set a goal of raising $2,000. We are asking each family to consider donating at least $25 per scout. We believe that supporting Friends of Scouting is important and we ask you to help us reach our goal.
