SPRING HIKE - WOODLAND PARK

Posted on Mar 27 2014 - 10:27pm
Calling all Pack 161 Cub Scouts for our spring hike, this year in Darien's own Woodland Park!

The boys will learn to find and follow trail blazes, read a trail map, treat nature with respect and care, and build on their outdoorsman skills.  We'll teach our older Webelos and Bear scouts to lead and watch over our younger Tiger and Wolf scouts by running point and "caboose" in our hiking groups.  Everyone will earn a Leave No Trace badge, and the hike will help satisfy a rank requirement for many of our scouts.

Let's meet on Sunday, April 27 from 1:30-2:30pm at Woodland Park's entrance on Middlesex Avenue (not the entrance on West Avenue).  Parking is very limited so please carpool! Scouts should be in uniform (Class B T-shirts are acceptable) and wearing comfortable walking shoes/hiking boots that will get muddy!  Bring something to drink in a water bottle as well.  Parents and siblings encouraged to join us, of course!

In the event of rain, the hike will be on Sunday, May 4 1:30-2:30pm.

September STEM Event Theme:  Responsibility

Scouts will learn to be responsible when dealing with chemical reactants. They need to wear goggles, gloves and learn to listen to instructions.

Hands on individual learning allows us to accomplish strong responsible in groups of 5 to 6. Cubs, by age/rank group, will be in patrols with Troop 35 or 53 mentors team collaboration. Cubs will rotate through each experiment by their age/rank group.

Team building and learning how a group can accomplish more than one individual will be stressed.

4 STEM trained leaders (Terry and Pat Gentile)+ 2 Certified science teachers (Kelly Robertson and Susie Flaherty) will lead the activities.

While you are there take a minute to say hello to our new Pack 161 STEM Coordinator, Paul Dickinson.  He has been hard at work with the other Packs in town to create amazing STEM events throughout the year for our Scouts.

HAPPY SUMMER, EVERYONE!!!

It's time to kick back, relax, refresh and look back on some of the amazing things we did this year...

We scoured the Tokeneke School grounds as pirates on a geocache treasure hunt....carved spectacular and spooky pumpkins for Halloween....sold popcorn in all corners of Darien to benefit our Pack and local Council....rolled up our sleeves and cleaned up Woodland Park for our town....learned some history in the Cub Scout Battle of Hoyt Field Day....got some important lifesaving tips from the "Posties" of the Darien EMS....celebrated the Blue and Gold with yummy cupcakes....slept over on the incredible USS Intrepid....sang holiday carols to senior residents at Atria....got a visit from the Wolf Conservation Center and "Atka" the Wolf....laughed and marveled at Danny Magic and his amazing magic show....raced our handcrafted cars at the Pinewood Derby....mixed magical potions and did some mad science....marched with cub scout pride in the Darien Memorial Day parade....had some springtime outdoor fun at the ConnJam campout....watched the Utopia skateboard team strut their stuff on four wheels....and celebrated the end of year with a Weed Beach pizza party.

All of us in the pack leadership have enjoyed making this year a memorable one for your scouts and for you too. We wish you a safe, happy and fun-filled summer!!
